What is NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian Government program that funds support for people with a permanent disability. It gives eligible participants a personalised funding plan based on their individual needs and goals. The NDIS is not a one-size-fits-all program. Your plan is built around what you need to live as independently as possible and take part in your community.
What can the NDIS fund?
Your NDIS plan may fund support for:
- Daily personal care and activities
- Transport to help you get around
- Help finding or keeping a job
- Therapy and behaviour support
- Household tasks
- Equipment, aids, and training to use them
- Home modifications
- Mobility equipment
- Vehicle modifications
Am I eligible?
To access the NDIS, you need to meet all three of these conditions:
- You are under 65 years old
- You are an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or a Protected Special Category Visa holder
- You have a permanent disability that affects your ability to take part in daily life
If you are not sure whether you qualify, contact the NDIS on 1800 800 110 or visit the NDIS eligibility page.
The three support budgets
Your NDIS plan has three funding categories. Each one covers different types of support.
Core Supports
Helps with everyday tasks and activities. This is where SIL and STA funding sit.
Capital Supports
Covers equipment, assistive technology, and home modifications.
Capacity Building
Funds therapy, training, and support to help you build skills and independence over time.
